Move over probiotics and omega 3-fatty acids, it is vinegar season now. For the last few years, many experts have been touting the health benefits. Besides being used to tenderize meat and add flavor to food, a shot of vinegar every day supposedly provides numerous health benefits. So what about this current fad is true?

There are many people who drink a shot first thing in the morning in the belief that it can act like a probiotic and enhance the growth of good bacteria in the intestine.
Vinegar is available in many flavors and colors. Today one can buy fruity and herbal-infused drinks to the hot acrid kind for cooking. Fermenting certain fruits and grains is the process of creating it. During the fermenting process various substances are produced. These are substances that have potent antibacterial and antioxidant activity. Anti-cancer properties are known to be found in Japanese Soya bean vinegar.

While this typical cooking liquid does have some health benefits, the reality is that the majority of its benefit have been hyped up by the manufacturers simply to sell it. There are many anecdotal reports indicating that vinegar can help one lose weight. However, this doesn’t happen if you continue to sit on the couch. Vinegar helps you lose weight provided you also eat a healthy diet and perform some type of exercise. The weight loss caused by taking a shot everyday averages 1-2 pounds a month, which may not seem a lot but over 12 months, it amounts to nearly 20-24 pounds in weight loss.
Vinegar is loaded with polyphenols which have anti-cancer fighting properties. Laboratory research reveals that in small animals, it may prevent the growth of cancer cells but there are no clinical studies in humans. It is important to know that vinegar doesn’t cure cancer but if taken regularly it may prevent some cancers. The subject of cancer is very complex and there are many other factors that play a role.
Vinegar is not a superfood but more like a supplement. Salads, vegetables and all type of meat and seafood go great with it. Because there are so many products on the market it does get confusing as which make/brand the consumer should ingest. Nutritionists state that one should go with an apple cider flavor; it is less acidic, is more palatable and easier to consume.
Types of Vinegar
Pasteurized is an additional type of vinegar available. However, these products may not be a good choice. Heat during pasteurization often destroys the probiotics and important enzymes in vinegar- so you do not derive the health benefits. The more fruity flavored vinegar tend to have more antioxidant activity. However, they are also more acidic and tend to cause stomach upset and even damage your enamel and gums. As much as we love to travel, it can get pricey. Other times, your biggest expense is the flight and the rest of the way you’re in the clear. Today we’ll give you some tips to help save money on countries that aren’t as budget friendly as Thailand, where a meal will cost you $2. It’s not easy to travel to expensive places on a budget, but if you follow the advice from this article you will be able to experience a pricey country, without feeling like your missing out on anything along the way.

For me, Scandinavia has a magical allure. Something about their design, impeccably clean streets, and kind people make me never want to leave (even for the winter!). Unfortunately, as a student, I can barely pay for a couple of $10 beers without feeling regret and wondering how I can afford to see everything, taste the local cuisine and keep a roof over my head for the entire trip. After a couple of learning experiences, I have cracked the code. Although we all have different travel styles and are willing to cut costs in certain areas, there’s hope for everyone’s budget.

Somethings Gotta Give
Unfortunately, the most obvious way to save is by not spending money or giving up some things. When traveling to expensive countries here are some of the best things to avoid if you want to save money:

If you love to experience the nightlife in a country you’re visiting, it may be hard for you to cut alcohol out of the budget. Unfortunately, alcohol can really do some damage to your pocket. If you are looking to try the local adult beverages, check out the supermarkets for more affordable prices on local beers, wines, and liquors. You can also check out the duty-free shops on your way out!
Eating out at restaurants, for me, is something that is nearly impossible to give up when traveling. If you absolutely can’t give up dining out, your best option is to do some research before you head out. Sites like TripAdvisor or Yelp are perfect for this. Most user comments include pictures of menus or their bills, which can give you a solid idea if the restaurant has prices that you can afford.
Last week, I visited Iceland with my boyfriend. We did our research and found this AMAZING hotdog stand that was not only a delicious local spot but CHEAP! Moments like this make the experience even more memorable, even if you do have to eat standing up!
In addition to doing some restaurant research, cooking your meals is always an efficient way to save a couple bucks. One of the best ways to experience a new place like a local is to go grocery shopping! You can get a glimpse of all the local flavors and see unique foods/ingredients that you might not even see on a menu in a restaurant! Take the chance to browse around and buy snacks ahead of time. Even if you aren’t looking to cook a meal at home, stocking up on some fruits or granola bars can keep everyone going between meals.
Shopping
If I won the lottery tomorrow, going on a shopping spree would be one of the top 5 things I would do after receiving the prize money. Unfortunately, I haven’t won the lottery and my chances of that happening are very slim. It pains me to admit that shopping is an unnecessary expense. When traveling to expensive countries make sure to keep the shopping at windows-length. Buying things, especially when you are dealing with foreign currencies, can add up quickly! Better to keep your souvenirs limited to the traditional postcards, magnets or whatever affordable little trinket you collect from your trips.
Transportation
Transportation, in general, is a difficult expense to reduce in your budget. Walking, of course, is always a great way to save money if you have the time. Renting bikes to get around the city is also a great way to save money.
Depending on your destination, renting a car can save you loads of little transportation fares. If you are a group or family, this can be a great idea if you feel comfortable driving in a foreign country. Most budget rentals cost about $70- $80 dollars per day. If you have far distances you want to cover on your vacation, I highly recommend renting a car.
Public transportation can add up. Particularly in places like London where a one-way ticket from the airport to the city center can cost you at least 15 pounds. Purchasing public transportation tickets from the machines can be overwhelming, especially when there is a line of impatient customers waiting behind you. Take a second to ask an employee if they offer a day or week pass for the public transport. These ticket passes often are a huge money saver as opposed to the alternative to buying single use tickets.
Without a doubt, taxis are costly. Regardless of the costs in a specific country, I am always wary of hopping into a traditional cab. I have personally been the victim of cabbies taking advantage of my foreign-ness one too many times. When arriving in a new city, take the chance to check Uber quickly. You can check the estimated cost of the fare, free of charge before requesting a driver to pick you up. Uber for me has been a travel lifesaver. And, if you are in a country that doesn’t support Uber, you still have options. Lyft or GrabCar are gaining popularity worldwide.
Save On Accommodation
Apart from flights, accommodation usually creates the largest expense on a trip. Hotels are typically high priced and out of my budget. I am also not as willing to sleep in a hostel dorm with 10 bunk beds to a room, even though I have had my fair share of fun experiences doing it. Airbnb is a great alternative to finding affordable accommodation without sacrificing any comfort. Depending on your group size, you can rent an entire home to share and split the price between the group. This is better than paying per bed in a hostel or sandwiching as many people as possible into a small hotel room. Some Airbnb’s do have added charges for groups over a certain number so make sure to look out for that.
Airbnb also offers the option to rent a private room in someone’s house or even a shared room. Thus far, I have only personally experienced either renting the private home or renting a private room in a shared apartment. The latter alternative is a great way to meet a local, and get some advice on places to eat, sights to see and general knowledge about the city you are visiting. An alternative to a hotel’s concierge, an Airbnb’s host can be just as informative, if not more!

What is intermittent fasting? Like the name suggests, it is an eating pattern that creates a fasting and eating cycle, which you can modify accordingly to fit your lifestyle.
Don’t be deterred or put off by intermittent fasting, thinking that you’re going to be starving yourself of food. This is not the case in the very least; in fact, you are still going to have the freedom to eat whatever you want, as long as you eat within a certain time frame. To put it simply, you can still indulge in the burger and fries, with a root beer float, without the post guilt feelings. And the best part is you will still lose weight! Popular Intermittent Fasting Methods
The Leangains Protocol (16/8 Method)
This is the most popular type of intermittent fasting and the one I would highly recommend starting out on. The Leangains is a daily fast that restricts your eating times from 12-8pm. After 8 pm you fast until the next morning, eating your first meal again at noon. The times are necessarily as important, as long as you maintain a 16 hour off and 8 hour on time frame. So you could change it to 10-6pm, or 1pm-9pm. It doesn’t matter; just find a time frame that works for you!
The Pros?
The Leangains diet is fantastic for gaining muscle, losing unwanted fat and improving your lean mass to fat ratio.
The Cons?
Finding ways to keep yourself busy in the morning, until it is time to eat. Or remembering that you should refrain from giving in to those late night munchies.
The Eat-Stop-Eat Protocol
This method of intermittent fasting is a bit more challenging because it involves 24-hour fasting. In general, you complete this 1-2 times per week. For example, you don’t eat anything on a Monday or Thursday.
The Pros?
The Eat-Stop-Eat protocol is effective because it helps limit your weekly caloric intake. It is also a proven method to gaining lean muscle mass, especially if you are able to withhold eating on the fasting days.
The Cons?
It can be extremely difficult for people to go an entire day without consuming anything; especially if your days are stressful and packed full of things to do.
The 5:2 Protocol
This protocol encourages you to eat as you normally would for five days out of the week. On the remaining two you limit your caloric intake to 500-600 calories a day.
The Pros?
The best part about this diet is that for 5 days you can eat, and continue your normal eating styles, consuming whatever, whenever you want.
The Cons?
The only cons are that you have to limit you calorie intake for two days, meaning you have to calorie count. For many calorie counting is an annoyance, and a burden to stick to. Increased hunger may be experienced on these days as well.

Weight Loss: Losing weight isn’t the only positive outcome of intermittent fasting, however, it is the largest motive for many individuals. Intermittent fasting is the new ‘diet’ for people who actually don’t like to diet! As mentioned earlier, fasting is a big contributor in losing fat, and gaining lean muscle, all the while eating the foods you enjoy most.
Insulin Resistance- Intermittent fasting also reduces your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and can lead to a great reduction in blood sugar levels. If you have Type 2 diabetes, it is even possible to reverse the diagnosis altogether.
Heart Health- intermittent fasting can decrease your risk for heart disease by reducing key risk factors. The majority of studies have been conducted on animals thus far. The studies show that when the animals were put into a fast mode they showed signs of lower blood pressure, triglycerides (sugars) and even lower cholesterol levels.
Cancer- Studies have shown that intermittent fasting can not only lower your risk for cancer, but it can reduce the side effects seen in chemotherapy.

Like any big lifestyle change, intermittent fasting has a few side effects. But if you take the necessary precautions and are aware of them, then you will succeed.
Hunger And Food Cravings- This probably seems obvious to most of you reading this, that if you restrict your eating times you will experience periods of increased hunger. The pangs are usually a temporary thing, and before you know it you’ll be fasting until noon without even realizing that you haven’t had your first meal.
Obsession With The Eating Window- Some people may develop a slight obsession of counting down the hours and minutes until they can eat. This is normal when you first start intermittent fasting, as it is a change in your eating schedule. Other’s may find that the window is too easy for them, and believe that by making their eating time even smaller, they will lose weight quicker. This is not true, and could lead to a relapse into old eating habits.
Overeating- When beginning to fast, you may feel the need to eat an excessive amount during the window, in order to hold you off until the morning. Some people eat twice as much as normal in compensation, but this will only lead to a stomach ache, and an increase in hunger the next morning. It is best to continue to eat normally during the window and to only eat when you are actually hungry.
Tips and Tricks for a Successful Intermittent Fasting Experience
1.This first tip is the most important concept to remember: intermittent fasting is not a diet! It’s a new way of life; a lifestyle change, and something that you will continue on for the future to come.
2.Find a method that works for you! These are only three methods of intermittent fasting, but there are so many out there. I personally practice the 16/8 protocol, because I find it the easiest and most liberating to follow. I would recommend trying this method first and then moving onto a different one to see which one you like the most. Intermittent fasting gives you the freedom to take charge of your life!
3.Drink plenty of water! When you wake up in the morning drink a glass of water; if you’re feeling a bit hungry, drink a glass of water. Even getting into the habit of carrying around a water bottle can help in creating new intermittent fasting habits.
4.Stay busy! Go about your day as you normally would, but try to keep your mind occupied. Don’t simply sit in front of a tv, watching commercials with food, or go to the grocery store on an empty stomach. Keep your mind busy, and before you know it, it’ll be lunchtime.
5. Intermittent fasting takes time! Don’t give up on this lifestyle change, if, after one day you are feeling too hungry to continue. Give your body time to adapt and adjust to the new eating windows.
6.Enjoy the journey. Hopefully, you will find intermittent fasting as easy as I did, and you will learn to enjoy this new lifestyle change. Continue to enjoy the foods you are eating, and know that the weight loss will come in time.

If your eyes are especially prone to puffiness or dark circles during allergy season, try taking an over the counter antihistamine to prevent blood from pooling.
